Many of us eat the same way we do so much else in life, mindlessly. We eat our meals while working, driving, or even walking. So we barely even taste our food. We do this partly because we are busy but there are other reasons why we eat mindlessly. Many of us also have a complex relationship with food, some people eat to self soothe so they over-consume even when they are not hungry. Others are on perpetual diets so eating is an activity filled with stress, guilt, and shame.
It's important to understand that the problem isn't the food itself, the problem is the relationship with food and we can improve that with mindfulness. Being mindful means paying attention to our present moment experiences in a purposeful and non-judgemental way. When we apply this practice of eating we can free ourselves from unhealthy eating habits and enhance our overall quality of life. So the question is how does mindful eating work? Well, when we eat mindfully we are fully attentive and engaged. Our senses are open and we entirely experience our food. WE pay attention to the textures, colors, sounds, aromas, and flavors and the result is that we enjoy the taste of our food much more.
Being mindful also helps us understand the emotions and circumstances that trigger our impulse to eat. We better recognize how full or satiated we are before, during, and after eating. So we are less likely to under or over-consume and of course, mindful eating means that we bring nonjudgment to the table rather than responding to our actions to self-criticism and shame. We do so with compassion and love. so the next time you sit down to a meal, I request you to practice mindful eating. Open your sense, eat slowly and fully taste each bite. Bring your full awareness to the experience and see how your relationship with food begins to change.
When we learn to eat mindfully, our eating can be transformed from a source of suffering to a source of nourishment, self-understanding, and delight.
In this current pandemic situation, most of us are working from home. We have our laptop in front of us to work on and full freedom to do stuff as we want. Somehow work from home can be inspiring for some period of time but as time passes we feel uninspired. We feel bored, we tend to seek some more snacks. But this snacking habit will lead to the intake of unnecessary calories on daily basis.
Unmindful eating behaviors impact our health. The distractions and overeating lead us to obesity and with obesity anxiety increase too. With losing control over the food we gain weight within a week and this leads to a gradually increased risk of health issues.
Healthy Eating
All the food that we consume on daily basis has greater effects on our health as well as the quality of our life.
Eating healthy is an easy thing to do as we need basic nutrition which is important to us but it's all our minds that keep us away from following healthy eating habits.
Food choices have a huge impact on our diet and it links to serious diseases as well.
Eating healthy can drastically reduce the risk of developing heart disease and even cancer.
Healthy eating is a habit everyone needs to incorporate into their lives. A balanced diet is required for our body to function well. A proper diet should consist of a mixture of macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrient includes carbohydrates, proteins, and fats while micronutrient includes vitamins and minerals.
At this current moment, it's been really hard to have 100% healthy food in our daily diet. All of us are fond of enjoying fast food and the reality is it's not healthy at all.
We all have a very busy life, not just for economic purposes but the reality is we have a busy mind. With a calm and mindful mind, we have time for everything we need to perform from daily workouts to hang out with loved ones.
All of us are eager to have healthy food in our diet but our mind is the one who plays the role of villain. Without the affirmation of mind, we can't perform anything.
We need to start with a small step. Let's start with a change in healthy breakfast for few days a week and gradually make small changes in our lunch and so on. Or we can dedicate a day in a week, where just consume healthy food all day.
Change takes time, no change comes overnight. Give it a try, have patience and embrace the change without any judgment.
It's best if we learn to admire the unique color, shape, and aroma of every food we intake. Make yourself and the people with whom you share food, realize where and how foods were grown and prepared. And have the feeling of gratitude for those who gave their time and
dedication for the preparation of the food and also to all those people who helped you to get your food to the kitchen.
