The Great Wall of China, which is one of the world's seven wonders, can even be seen from space. It has a great contribution to China’s history and now still plays a vital role in the tourism development of China.

Visitors to China would undoubtedly pay a visit to the Great Wall. It is said that it was built around two thousand years ago with a motive to protect cultivable agricultural land from foreign invasion.

Around 400,000 people died during the construction of the Great Wall. Nobody exactly knows how long did it take to construct the wall but it is predicted that it was built about 3000 years ago and different dynasties are involved in the construction of the world’s longest wall.

Great Wall of china

At the current moment, the Great Wall lengthens over 6700 kilometers rising through cliffs, deserts, hills, and plains from the east coast to the northwest region of China. The Liaoning sections of the wall, Hebei sections, Tianjin sections, Beijing sections, Shanxi sections, Shaanxi sections, Inner Mongolia sections, Ningxia sections, and Gansu sections are the nine sections of the Wall that are currently accessible to visitors from all over the world.

Badaling, Simatai, Jinshanling, Mutianyu, Gubeikou, Huanghuacheng, and Jiankou are the main sections of the Great Wall in Beijing. These parts of the Wall in Beijing, are the most visited of all. The wall is well maintained and exhibits artifacts from the Ming dynasty when the wall was under massive construction.

The Badaling section is known for its mighty structures, comprehensiveness, and the well-known Juyonguan Pass. The Badaling part of the Great Wall was where the majority of the Great Wall photographs published in travel books were taken. Tourists will enjoy the Mutianyu area of the structure as well.

The Jinshanling, Simatai, and Gubeikou sections of the wall are narrower and quieter than the Badaling and Mutianyu sections, while Huanghuacheng and Jiankou have become popular with adventure hikers.

No matter which part of the great wall you visit, you will be amused by the immense engineering of the wall. I remember my first visit to the great wall in the year 2013. It was a hot summer day but I enjoyed walking the steep and narrow parts of the Badaling section, where I felt the strong wind breeze between the view points in the wall.

Wheelchair accessible  Information

Not all parts of the wall are wheelchair accessible. During the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, some attractions and services in Beijing were upgraded to make them wheelchair accessible to some extent. Nonetheless, except in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, China is still far from wheelchair-friendly.

The Badaling Great Wall is more wheelchair accessible than the Mutianyu Great Wall. Starting from Tower 1 to Tower 3 of the Badaling Great Wall, a separate flat lane has been designed for wheelchair users.

Private tour guide

A private tour guide is a bit costly but if you traveling with a group of people it will be beneficial and economic. It is better for you to hire them and make reservations before leaving for china so you do not have to face any unnecessary disputes with the guides. The majority of the Chinese guides can speak and communicate in English.
